Martha Karua speaks after Ruto is named President Elect

Azimio La Umoja coalition Deputy Presidential candidate Martha Karua has openly said that they were contemplating moving to Court to challenge Deputy President William Ruto’s victory.

In a tweet on her official Twitter account, Ms Karua said that the announcement which was on Monday, August 15, 2022, made by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati that DP Ruto had won was not over.

“It is not over till it is over,” she tweeted.

Mr Chebukati declared that DP Ruto was the president-elect after he managed to garner 7,176,141 votes (50.49 per cent) of the votes against Mr Odinga who managed to garner 6,942,930 votes (48.85 per cent).

Ms Karua was picked as Mr Odinga’s running mate following interviews and consultation that was made amongst Azimio La Umoja’s top leadership.

It is worth noting that in case Mr Odinga’s led coalition disputes the win, they then have seven days to file a case in the Supreme Court challenging DP Ruto’s win.

Ms Karua, a seasoned politician is a renowned lawyer and a former Magistrate.

On Monday evening, it was already clear that the Azimio Camp was against the results after they accused Mr Chebukati of hiding from them yet they had grievances they needed to share with him.

Mr Odinga did not make it to the Bomas of Kenya and his office is yet to give an official communication on what transpired.

However, DP Ruto was at Bomas of Kenya which was the national tallying centre for the electoral agency.

In his speech and later a press conference with the press, DP Ruto said that he was willing to cooperate with the opponents just in case they had a dispute on the outcome of the elections.

Over the weekend, Ms Karua addressed coalition party elected leaders at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) where she said that they had tallied results from Form 34As across the nation which were available to the public by IEBC and they had emerged top.

She further stated that they would wait until IEBC makes the final announcement since as a coalition they did not have the power to do so.
